Achill Island is the largest island off the west coast of Ireland.
Achill is an island but is connected to the mainland of Ireland by a bridge at Achill Sound. The bridge spans about 100 metres and allows two lanes of traffic to pass onto the island.
The main villages of Achill are (from the west) Dooagh, Pollagh, Keel, Dookinella, The Valley, Bunacurry, Cashel, Dooega, Saula, Ashleam, Dereens, Cloughmore, Achill Sound and Currane.
They speak traditional Irish as well as English.
Achill has a beautiful little sandy beach - Keel Bay. The view from Menaun Heights towards this bay is spectacular.
Various stunning beaches make this a popular holiday location for the locals.
