Switzerland

Avenches is a town of about 3,000 people in the Three Lakes area of Switzerland. Avenches is noted for the Roman ruins that remain from the time when the area was a major Roman outpost.

  • Roman site Aventicum, +41 26 676 99 22. The remains of the Roman city of Aventicum which once housed 20,000 people are scattered over quite a big area and include an amphitheatre and a bath house. Access free, Fr. 60 for a guided tour for up to 25 people.
  • Roman museum. Seasonal, but always W-Su 14:00-17:00. Free; Fr. 6 during temporary exhibitions.
