Middleton-in-Teesdale is a small market town in County Durham.
- High Force. April-Oct 10:00-17:00, Nov-March 10:00-16:00. Impressive waterfall, where the River Tees plunges 71 feet over Whin Sill, the layer of hard rock that elsewhere underpins Hadrian's Wall. A mile downstream is its junior brother, the 18 foot Low Force.
Details here are for the usual north bank access by road. On foot along the south bank path, you can see it anytime for free. Parking £3, gate adults £1.50, child 50p. - Kirkcarrion. This tumulus is believed to be a Bronze Age burial site. It's nowadays topped by a copse of pine trees.

- Follow the valley north, over the moors to Alston, then explore Hadrian's Wall.
- Going downstream leads to Barnard Castle, with the Bowes Museum, then you join A66: either west to the Lake District or south along A1(M).
