San Marco in Lamis is a town and comune in the province of Foggia, in the Apulia region of Southern Italy. It is on the Gargano peninsula, an isolated mountain massif at the "spur" of the Italian "boot". San Marco in Lamis is part of the Gargano National Park, a protected area founded in 1991, that is mainly covered by forest (the so-called Foresta Umbra).
The town was built around the Monastery of St. Matthew (Santuario San Matteo sul Gargano), which was erected in the 10th and 11th century.
In 1793 San Marco in Lamis was designated a "city" by Royal Decree; this was due to enhanced agricultural activities which led to an economic recovery and a growing number of inhabitants.
The historical roots and traditions are important for many inhabitants and widely visible: the yearly Good Friday processions with the folkloric fracchie processions are well-known throughout Italy.
