March 15 square, the main square of Vác Vác is a city in Pest County, Hungary. It is located on the eastern bank of the Danube near the magnificent Danube bend. Though not visited nearly as much as either Szentendre or Visegrád it can be a pleasant and enjoyable stopover between the two.

The Cathedral of Vác

Március 15 tér. Visit the nicest Square of Hungary, all houses of its are national level protected monuments. The main square of Vác is a blend of Rococo and Baroque mansions, but you'll also note the archeaological diggings that dominate the area. The Dominican Church is the baroque cathedral dominating the south side of the square.

There are different, wonderful decorations in the front of the church, Ion-offsets, spiral ornaments, vases and statues. Despite of the simple outlook the inside is very rich decorated. The colors are bright, the statues are white, and the altar-pieces are genial. The sensation of the year 1995 was the finds in a secret crypt of the church. 200 years along was the entrance of the crypt walled up. Town Prison, Köztársaság út 62-64.. The building of the Prison was built for the convict of the noble youth. It was named "Theresianum" for the honour of the queen. It is still a functioning prison. It gained notoriety during communism and the Horthy regime for being one of the cruelest prisons in the area and there are several famous escape stories. Today you can get eerily close to the building and see the guard towers, as well as a memorial for those who were imprisoned and died there.
Round Tower. It is the only remaining part of the former town fortifications. Today it is built into a far more modern house.
Triumphal Arch, Köztársaság u. (on just north of Március 15 square. 24/7. Also sometimes called the Stone Gate, it was built in 1764 at what was then the town boundary to welcome Empress Maria Theresa. It is notably smaller than most other similar arches (only one lane of traffic can go under it and there are no stairs to the top), still it is nonetheless a beautiful structure in the city. This is only one of this kind in all Hungary. Free.
Franciscan church and monastery, Géza király tér, 12, +36 27 303803. The oldest church of Vác belonged to the Franciscans. It stood on the place of the old fortress destroyed during the siege of the Turks in 1685. Also known as the Temple of friends; King Géza I buried here.

Kőszentes bridge, Diadal tér, ~18. Baroque bridge over Gombás stream with six sacred statues, built in 1753-1757. It is a nationally unique historic edifice. Besides, it is the only Baroque bridge in Hungary today.
The Red House, Doktor Csányi László körút 52. This was built in 1733 in Baroque style and it is recognised as a listed building. Through more than two centuries it was the rural building of the bishopcy. Its striking colour was the result of the bricklayers from Naples working here.
Honvéd Monument, Liget (Hwy 2) (South one km. Military Monument. Built in 1868, the year after the Reconciliation (Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867). This Treaty re-established partially the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, separate from and no longer subject to the Austrian Empire.

The Column of the Holy Trinity, Szentháromság tér. The Column of the Holy Trinity is a historic monument. The column, standing in this square which hosted the fish market, is one of the most beautiful edifices. It was built using sandstone and was commissioned by Bishop Althann between 1750 and 1755.

The former Dominican church crypt was found during the renovations. A special climate of the crypt ensured the very good conditions of 262 coffins and the bodies as well. Here can bee seen the mummies with the rich decorated palls, and the painted coffins. These founds are unique in Central Europe. In front of the church there is the statue of St. Joseph with the little Jesus. The collection includes a few mummies, coffins, costumes and funeral props.

Nagybörzsöny

Márianosztra. One of the most popular religion places in Hungary. The name of the village came from the patron saint of Márianosztra: (Latin: Maria nostra, meaning: our Maria). The church is surrounded by walls. A water-mill from the 29th century is one of the main attractions of the village. The water-mill (Hu:Antal-féle vízimalom, Loc:Széchenyi tér 10 /Hunyadi tér 10-12.) is still working and the former mill-house with the stable exists as an industry museum. Saint Nicolaus Church (Hu:Szent Miklós-templom) built in Baroque style between 1782 to 1788. Church of the miners (Hu:Fájdalmas Szűznek szentelt Bányásztemplom), Gothic style, built in the 14th century. Forest train is a unique forest train in the mountai, about eight km long to Nagyirtáspuszta from Nagybörzsöny. Szendehely. - Local history collection, the German minority in past memories, equipment, use objects, typical costumes be viewed in the museum (Hu: Falumúzeum. Loc.: Béke utca 25.,T: +36 35 376003 szendesu@axelero.hu). Roman Catholic Church, a free standing, single-nave church. There is a center tower before the south-west facade. At the end is a line closure sanctuary which is narrower as the nave. A sacristy attached on the NW side. Gable roofed. The outer wall of the sacristy is the crest plaque of the Count Mihály Althan who was Bishop of Vac. (Hu: Római Katolikus Templom. Loc.: Váci Rd. T: +36 35 376003).
Zebegény. The most characterises building of the town is the roman-catholic church (Hu:Havas Boldogasszony római Katolikus templom) Petőfi Square, secession style, 1910, a work of the famous architectures Kós Károly and Jánszky Béla. There are nine passion pictures – made form metal – along the road to the classic Passion chapel (Kálvária-kápolna és a kálvária). In the cemetery lies Szőnyi István the famous artist. His former living house exists as a Memorial Museum (Hu:Szőnyi Emlékmúzeum. Loc:Bartóky utca 7.) There is a private shipping-historical collection (Hu:Hajózástörténeti gyűjtemény) in Zebegény owned a retired captain, Rock shrine at the foot of Calvary Mount (Hu:Sziklaszentély). Tradition has that it was a hermit cave and the inhabitant of the cave carved the relief of the Virgin Mary, Villa Maróti (Hu:Maróti-villa), Dőry mansion (Dőry-kastély), National flag and national heroes memorial park (emlékpark) on Calvary hill, Slovak and Swabian peasant houses, the colorfully painted wooden "Sunflower Houses" (Hu:„napraforgó-házak”), in the 1930s, take a walk in the Forest of Börzsöny Mountains (Börzsöny hegység), Old mill (Hu:Öreg malom, Loc:Fischer köz).

The water-mill (Hu:Antal-féle vízimalom, Loc:Széchenyi tér 10 /Hunyadi tér 10-12.) is still working and the former mill-house with the stable exists as an industry museum. Saint Nicolaus Church (Hu:Szent Miklós-templom) built in Baroque style between 1782 to 1788. Forest train is a unique forest train in the mountai, about eight km long to Nagyirtáspuszta from Nagybörzsöny. Szendehely. - Local history collection, the German minority in past memories, equipment, use objects, typical costumes be viewed in the museum (Hu: Falumúzeum. Loc.: Béke utca 25.,T: +36 35 376003 szendesu@axelero.hu). Roman Catholic Church, a free standing, single-nave church. There is a center tower before the south-west facade. At the end is a line closure sanctuary which is narrower as the nave. A sacristy attached on the NW side. Gable roofed. The outer wall of the sacristy is the crest plaque of the Count Mihály Althan who was Bishop of Vac. (Hu: Római Katolikus Templom. Loc.: Váci Rd. T: +36 35 376003).

Zebegény. The most characterises building of the town is the roman-catholic church (Hu:Havas Boldogasszony római Katolikus templom) Petőfi Square, secession style, 1910, a work of the famous architectures Kós Károly and Jánszky Béla. There are nine passion pictures – made form metal – along the road to the classic Passion chapel (Kálvária-kápolna és a kálvária). In the cemetery lies Szőnyi István the famous artist. His former living house exists as a Memorial Museum (Hu:Szőnyi Emlékmúzeum. Loc:Bartóky utca 7.) There is a private shipping-historical collection (Hu:Hajózástörténeti gyűjtemény) in Zebegény owned a retired captain, Rock shrine at the foot of Calvary Mount (Hu:Sziklaszentély). Tradition has that it was a hermit cave and the inhabitant of the cave carved the relief of the Virgin Mary, Villa Maróti (Hu:Maróti-villa), Dőry mansion (Dőry-kastély), National flag and national heroes memorial park (emlékpark) on Calvary hill, Slovak and Swabian peasant houses, the colorfully painted wooden "Sunflower Houses" (Hu:„napraforgó-házak”), in the 1930s, take a walk in the Forest of Börzsöny Mountains (Börzsöny hegység), Old mill (Hu:Öreg malom, Loc:Fischer köz).

Verőce. Gorka Géza, the famous ceramic artist settled in Verőce; his former house and yard is a Ceramic Museum (Hu:Kerámia Múzeum Verőce, Loc:Szamos Street.22. Phone: +36 30 9508760. Visitors can get Szokolya and Királyrét by the narrow-gauge railway and several excellent excursion places (Kisinóc, Nagy-Hideg-Hegy, Csóványos) are easy to reach from these villages.
