The construction of the mighty monument on the northeast side of the Schiller square lasted three years from 1542 to 1544. Only 22 years later, in 1566, the construction of the building has been extended. Nowadays the Old Chancellery would be compareable to the function of a town hall. Today the building is used as a restaurant and a bar.
