Untermyer Park and Gardens is a 42 acre City of Yonkers public park and gardens in northwest Yonkers. It includes several areas of interest including:
-a formal Walled Garden with Greek temple and amphitheater, canals and fountains all overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades
-the Vista Steps which descend to an overlook of the Hudson
-the Temple of Love, a man-made rocky outcropping topped by a wrought iron gazebo.
-a winding carriage trail which links to the Old Croton Aqueduct trail
The gardens were part of the former estate of lawyer Samuel Untermyer who was known for his litigation skills and progressive politics; after earning money as a corporate lawyer in his youth, he championed women's suffrage, was a trust-buster and launched a boycott of Nazi Germany before much of the world was aware of what was happening to Jews in Germany. Untermyer left the estate to the City of Yonkers; it is now being restored by the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy.
