Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, sisters Lauren and Cassie opened Sister Srey Café in November 2012 and made Siem Reap their home. Their vision was simple - to create a social enterprise that trained, educated and empowered disadvantaged Cambodians, a stepping stone to a brighter future. With coffee as their passion and a want for good, wholesome, fresh food, Sister Srey was born. We proudly support local businesses and farmers by buying local produce whenever possible. “Srey” means “Sister” in Khmer, but besides the obvious kinship connection, there is more to the name than meets the eye. As a sign of respect, Khmer people greet each other with titles of family whether they know them or not. Older men and women are uncles and aunties, and nearer your age, they are brothers and sisters. The girls named their café Sister Srey as a dedication to the sisterhood of Cambodia and of course, to each other. Since the café’s opening, the sisters have founded the Hearts to Harmony Foundation. A non-for-profit organisation, its funds come from a percentage of the café’s profits, plus donations from generous people. The Foundation enhances the lives of individuals, families and communities by giving them a "hand up, not a hand out" This is done through education sponsorships, health and hygiene workshops, toilet and well builds, micro businesses and bicycle and rice drops.
