Hayashi Department Store

Tainan, Taiwan

On its opening in 1932, the building boasted a then state-of-the-art elevator, which still works till this day. It was bombed during World War II and still has bullet marks to show on the rooftop, next to its Shinto shrine. Located on what was once the richest shopping street in Tainan, the site fell into disuse until restoration of its elegant interior was completed in 2014. It is now home to another departmental store selling Japanese and Taiwanese food and handicrafts. Tainan Land Bank diagonally across the road from the store is also a stately Japanese-era building.
