The Victorian pier is a stubby affair, only 100 m long, so the sea only reaches it at high tide. Originally it was 370 m; it was shortened during World War 2, which does make structural upkeep simpler. So the pier itself is in good condition, but it’s only open when the amenities there are open, and these have constantly struggled financially. In early 2017 it’s open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 6 pm, for the pier bar, café, and restaurant. However these have been sold for conversion into a 500-seater fish restaurant, and this building work is bound to close the pier for some weeks. Check local media for progress.
