The main passenger rail system in Germany is Deutsche Bahn (DB or German Rail), commonly known as "Die Bahn". More than 4.5 million people use DB's 29,000 trains per day and serve more than 5,500 stations along 35,000 km of tracks. Deutsche Bahn used to be a government company but is now fully privatized (although it is entirely owned by the government).
The connection between the former East and West halves of the country has been upgraded and expanded, and the German high-speed rail has now reached all major cities in the east. Almost all of the roadbed in the eastern part of the country has been upgraded or abandoned.
