Beginning in December 2004, the new medium-distance high-speed train service to and from Seville and Córdoba (then known as AV Media Distancia, Midway Express) was put into operation and will be shortened to 40 minutes in the future. A year later, the model was renamed Avant and opened a new route: Madrid - Ciudad Real - Puertollano.

After the construction of a 21-kilometer branch line and the connection to Toledo, the Spanish National Railway began in November 2005 with a new medium-speed service to and from Madrid and Toledo. It takes only 30 minutes to travel between the two places. However, the project will not allow direct access to Toledo and other adjacent areas connected by wide-track networks. At the same time, goods and passengers transported on traditional Spanish wide rails will not be able to reach the city directly.
